In an effort to further support the social, emotional, and academic needs of our students, the Schuyler-Colfax Guidance Department will begin grade level looping, wherein each counselor is assigned a grade level of students to follow throughout their three years.
Grade 7 - Mrs. Kuhn
Guidance Department Quarterly Newsletter
Marking Period 1
The Schuyler-Colfax guidance department is excited to continue adding to and updating our website. Mrs. Gorman (8th grade counselor), Mrs. Kuhn (7th grade counselor) and Mrs. Vivino (6th grade counselor) will be sharing our latest initiatives and helpful suggestions in a quarterly newsletter.
To kick off, we would like to share the successful programs that have already been implemented. In honor of Week of Respect each counselor conducted classroom lessons with the theme of “Tolerance”. Students created “peace” signs, which included their nationality, religion, favorite subjects and favorite activities. Students got to share the information and see the similarities they have with other classmates.
We wrapped up October with Red Ribbon Week and School Violence Awareness week where students enjoyed playing “Wipe Out” with drug trivia and were awarded prizes. We had a guest speaker, Matt Mayberry, come in to speak with the students about his journey and making good choices.
We continue to run the Student Ambassador Club along with the School Climate Team and encourage all students to become involved in helping to create a warmer, positive school environment where everyone feels welcome. Please encourage your child to join.
Please know that each counselor is here for the students and parents for any on-going academic, emotional or social need. Students are encouraged to come see us and parents are always welcome to contact us via phone or email.

The guidance counselor plays a very important role in development of each child at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School. Each counselor will meet with her assigned counselors to introduce herself and/or discuss her role in the student’s academic career. In addition to counseling students on their academics, the guidance counselors also mediate stressful middle school issues as well as facilitate programs.
For the sixth graders, the Guidance Department provides discussions on the use of the planner and middle school responsibilities. An introduction to career exploration begins in the sixth grade. Most importantly, the counselors assist in the transition to middle school and establish a relationship between counselor and counselee.
For the seventh graders, the Guidance Department continues the exploration of careers with the COIN Program. They also counsel the students in academic and social concerns, by monitoring their progress throughout the year.
For the eighth graders, the Guidance Department provides high school orientation and individual scheduling appointments. They meet with individual students and their parents/guardians early in the year to discuss high school expectations and career choices that have been discovered and developed through the COIN Program.
If at anytime during the year, students have any concerns regarding academic, social, or family matters, they can see their counselor for assistance. The best time to see the counselor is during study or lunch.
Counselor’s names appear on student schedules or you can refer to the assignment schedule below. In addition to individual and group counseling services, parents may seek advice about scheduling, career information, extracurricular activities, educational programs and their child’s developmental issues. Parents/Guardians may call the guidance office 973-633-3130 ext. 120 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to discuss student progress or to make an appointment. To request assignments after an absence of three or more days, please call the Guidance secretary, Mrs. Lennox.
