Guidance Department Quarterly Newsletter
Marking Period 2

Hello Schuyler Parents/Guardians,
There is quite a bit going on in the guidance department marking period 2.
The 6th & 7th grade counselors will be going into classes to conduct a Career Activity with the students.  The 8th grade counselor completed the Career Activity with the 8th grade students.  In case parents or students would like to go back to check out the website, it is located on the Schuyler-Colfax, Media Center page under Career Interest Activity.
Most of our 8th grade students already attended high school orientation.  We have begun the scheduling process for high school.  Guidance counselors will be going into 8th grade classes to explain the HS scheduling process.
Please look for the course request sheets to come home in early February.  Please consult Wayne Hills Home Page, under the Guidance Tab for the Course of Studies Manual containing descriptions of classes and graduation requirements.
Marking period 2 report cards will be available on February 3rd on the Parent Portal.
We will continue with the remainder of our Character Education Lessons during homeroom. Please ask your child to fill you in.
Students participated in a “Town Hall” meeting with administration, guidance and teachers as a friendly reminder of academic expectations and school rules.
Please know that each counselor is here for the students and parents for any on-going academic, emotional or social need.  Students are encouraged to come see us and parents are always welcome to contact us via phone or email.
**HELPFUL GUIDANCE HINTS**
  • This time of year planners tend to get lost in the shuffle.  Please remind your child that the student planner is still an important organizational tool and they should be referring to it daily.

  • Please make sure to monitor your child’s grades on-course on a regular basis – it’s important to keep on top of their grades!

The guidance counselor plays a very important role in development of each child at Schuyler-Colfax Middle School. Each counselor will meet with her assigned counselors to introduce herself and/or discuss her role in the student’s academic career. In addition to counseling students on their academics, the guidance counselors also mediate stressful middle school issues as well as facilitate programs.

For the sixth graders, the Guidance Department provides discussions on the use of the planner and middle school responsibilities. An introduction to career exploration begins in the sixth grade. Most importantly, the counselors assist in the transition to middle school and establish a relationship between counselor and counselee.

For the seventh graders, the Guidance Department continues the exploration of careers with the COIN Program. They also counsel the students in academic and social concerns, by monitoring their progress throughout the year.

For the eighth graders, the Guidance Department provides high school orientation and individual scheduling appointments. They meet with individual students and their parents/guardians early in the year to discuss high school expectations and career choices that have been discovered and developed through the COIN Program.

If at anytime during the year, students have any concerns regarding academic, social, or family matters, they can see their counselor for assistance. The best time to see the counselor is during study or lunch.

Counselor’s names appear on student schedules or you can refer to the assignment schedule below. In addition to individual and group counseling services, parents may seek advice about scheduling, career information, extracurricular activities, educational programs and their child’s developmental issues. Parents/Guardians may call the guidance office 973-633-3130 ext. 120 between the hours of 8:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. to discuss student progress or to make an appointment. To request assignments after an absence of three or more days, please call the Guidance secretary, Mrs. Lennox.

The goal of Schuyler-Colfax Guidance Counselors is to create a positive and productive learning environment for every student during their middle school years.

You may contact your child's Guidance Counselor via email or phone. When e-mailing your child's guidance counselor, please put your name & your child's name in the subject line.
